EDUCATION
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
“The Church has always had the duty of scrutinizing the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel. Thus, in language intelligible to each generation, she can respond to the perennial questions which men ask about this present life and the life to come, and about the relationship of the one to the other. We must therefore recognize and understand the world in which we live, its explanations, its longings, and its often-dramatic characteristics” (Gaudium et Spes, Paragraph 4, in the (Diocese of Baton Rouge Pastoral Planning Task Force Report and Recommendations. February 2017.)
SCRIPTURAL FOUNDATION
“But you, remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, and that from infancy you have known the sacred scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:14-17)
VISION
Faith formation and EDUCATION in Saint Jude Parish are critical aspects of the lives of all parishioners. The primary venues in which this takes place are Saint Jude the Apostle School, Parish School of Religion, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.), and adult education opportunities. This is particularly important now, given the challenging, current issues and questions that continually arise in society and church. Ministries that serve the educational and faith formation needs of the faith community include:
Throughout the year, various opportunities for adult education and formation are offered. Some are offered all year long, such as our Small Christian Communities, process. Some are offered seasonally, as in Advent and Lent. These gatherings are an opportunity for adult Catholics to have a more in-depth experience of study and reflection on specific topics and areas of our faith and church teaching. While this is commonly referred to as “adult education,” there have been times when college students and high school students have chosen to attend. Our younger members are certainly always welcome. These events are advertised in announcements at Mass, in our bulletin, and on our parish website and other social media platforms.

The task of the Parish School of Religion (PSR) is to teach, proclaim, and witness the "good news" of God's love and mercy to all our children (grades K to 10) who attend public/private school. Students attending a non-Catholic school are required to attend PSR to be eligible for Confirmation.
Elementary PSR meets Wednesdays from 6:15-7:15 pm during the school year.
High School PSR meets about every other Wednesday from 6:00-7:15 pm.

For each of the sacraments there is a process of preparation. Prior to the celebration of each, we take time to sit down with one another to reflect on the theology and origin of each sacrament and the significance that they can have in our lives. Our website offers a description of how to register for sacraments as well as the processes leading up to each. Please see the Sacraments tab on the navigation bar for more specific details.

The largest ministry of Saint Jude the Apostle Parish is Saint Jude the Apostle School. The school was founded in 1983 through the Diocese of Baton Rouge to provide quality Catholic education to the children of St. Jude Parish. The school, as a ministry of Saint Jude the Apostle Church, works closely with the Parish to minister to the academic, spiritual, and social needs of the students. Our school was recognized by the US Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, as a National Blue Ribbon School in the category of Exemplary High Performing Schools for 2020. The principal of St. Jude School is Mrs. Michelle Gardiner, and the assistant principal is Mrs. Laura Favaloro. The school's website is https://stjudebr.org/

St. Jude hosts a five-day Vacation Bible School program during summer months for children PreK - 5th Grade. Our Vacation Bible School is based on the teachings of Christ and his Church. It builds up the knowledge of God’s Word, but also gives the youth the opportunity to respond to His truth by living out their Catholic faith. Each year a different set of bible stories, selected saints, sacraments and themes are used to teach the children how their lives can be transformed by God’s great love for them. Bible stories, scripture memory verses, skits, movies, games, snacks, crafts, music and much more will fill each exciting day of VBS! Our Vacation Bible School is staffed entirely by volunteers.
Contact: The Parish Office at 225-766-2431 or [email protected] for the 2024 VBS information.
This ministry is for parishioners, ages 19 through 29. Using a curriculum and video series provided by Ascension Press, the group engages in a guided discussion of various aspects of scripture. Each series usually lasts about 6 weeks. A break is taken when one series concludes, and then the group resumes with a new series.
